LAPD Sergeant Shiou Deng, a 26-year veteran of the force, was tragically killed early Monday morning while assisting at the scene of a crash on the 405 Freeway. Just after 2 a.m., Deng stopped to help with a two-car collision in the Sepulveda Pass. As he exited his vehicle to render aid, he was struck by oncoming traffic and later pronounced dead at the hospital. The initial crash had already resulted in one fatality, and Deng’s death marked a second tragic loss from the incident. In response, all southbound lanes at Moraga Drive were closed for hours while the investigation unfolded, with traffic diverted to the 101 Freeway.
Deng was remembered by LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell as a hero who gave his life trying to protect others. Recently promoted to sergeant, Deng had devoted much of his career to the LAPD’s Mental Evaluation Unit, where he helped officers respond to mental health crises. Mayor Karen Bass called his death “a sad day for our city,” praising his commitment to serving the most vulnerable. Both officials emphasized his dedication, compassion, and bravery, honoring him as a model public servant who died while putting others first.
